Jihye Ryoo is an artist motivated by memories. Particularly about the memories linked with sceneries in her journeys. Her drawing practices focus on capturing the balance between the natural and manmade aspect of the scenery on the journey. Through these drawings, she aims to add a source of record to society’s collective memory of places. Although recordings are normally expected to be photographs, she does it through live drawings. Also in her studio practice, she re-captures a memory from photographic record of the journey. In this practice she intends to divide the two aspects of memory: one that could be shared with others and the one that could only be shared only by oneself. Within her images she draws the audience’s eyes to the aspect of the journey that she intends to share. Through this practice, she explores the relationship of individual memory and collective memory of the society.
